About this course

This is a 1-day programme aims to equip learners with necessary knowledge and skills in performing safe handling and administration of medication so that they can assist in serving of oral and topical medications to the patients. Step by step sequential is used for the rational for sequencing.

  1. Prior to face-to-face class, learners will undergo 1.5 hours of asynchronous e-learning covering K4: Common medication terminologies used in clinical practice in LU1, and K6: Common drug allergy reactions to medications and K7 Methods of disposal for medication in LU3.
  2. The face-to-face class will begin with a recap of key learning points for asynchronous e-learning of K4 in LU1 before touching on the basics of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics, providing learners with an understanding of how drugs interact with the body and vice versa. This is followed by a discussion on Drug Interactions, which builds on the previous topic by exploring how different drugs can affect each other’s performance. The lesson will delve into Side Effects and Adverse Reactions, equipping learners with the knowledge to anticipate and manage potential negative outcomes of medication use. The subsequent topics, Prescription Terminology and Dosage Forms, further enhance learners’ familiarity with common medication terminologies. The session then progresses to Routes of Administration and Dosage Terminology, which are crucial for understanding the different ways medications can be administered and their respective dosage instructions. This knowledge is essential for the safe and effective use of medications. The session will conclude with Safe Administration of Medications and Medication Errors. These topics are vital in clinical practice as they focus on the prevention of common errors in handling medications, thereby ensuring patient safety and the efficacy of treatment.
